The girls' junior high race was thought to be slated for 4:00 p.m., with the boys' race set for 4:30 p.m at the Deer River Invitational. While out for a warm-up jog with Coach Voge, the boys thought they had a comfortable 40 minutes to spare. Surprise! They were lining up with the girls. No worries—cats ALWAYS land on their feet! Proving once again they are a team of big cats, they adapted without missing a beat, pouncing on the challenge ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.
With their coach sprinting toward them to alert them of the race time change, Zane Halse remarked, "I knew something was up when she was running!" "Uh oh," the team exclaimed. With only a minute and a half to spare—the Panthers swiftly yet calmly made their way to the start line. Despite the chaos, they turned their adrenaline into fuel. The Panthers charged up the hills, passing competitors, and leaned into the downhills as if they were flying—or, as Woody from *Toy Story* would say, "That's not flying, that's FALLING with STYLE."
Markis and Brayden lined up for the race side by side, exchanging some light-hearted banter of course. “Bro, you’re dusty,” they joked at the start. “Well, I ran at the Olympics,” Markis quipped. “How do you like second place?” Brayden shot back. No dust here-both set personal bests. Markis finished 6th, earning a ribbon with a time of 10:09.5 and a pace of 6:32.3 per mile, a huge improvement from his previous 7:12 pace. Brayden followed closely, also collecting a ribbon, placing 8th with a time of 10:14 and a pace of 6:35 per mile, a significant jump from his previous 7:54 pace.
The duo took a different approach from last race, running up front from start to finish. At the finish, it was a Panthers vs. Wolves battle, as Markis gritted his teeth in true Panther style, passing an Ely Wolve’s runner at the last second and beating him by a mere 0.1 seconds. Brayden, pushing through knee pain, stayed with Markis, and edged out another Ely runner by just 1.5 seconds. They gave no room to the competition ahead and did not let anyone behind catch up. Both finished on empty, showcasing their iron will.
In cross-country, the key to conquering hills is staying on your toes, maintaining a steady pace, and pumping your arms. The longer a runner is on a hill, the more energy it drains. Zane Halse demonstrated this in his race by sticking to proper hill technique, powering up the slopes on his toes. “Everyone probably thinks I look weird doing this,” he joked, but like a true big cat, he did not let that bother him. He focused on his race strategy, tuning out the opinions of any "house cats" around him. Starting conservatively and overcoming the challenge of not having enough time to use his inhaler, Zane placed in the top half with a personal best time of 11:40.7 and an average pace of 7:31 per mile, significantly improving from his previous pace of 8:23 per mile.
Video game enthusiast Kenny Litzau displayed determination as he zipped up and down the course like a character in Mario Kart. Motivated by the promise of his favorite V8 Fusion Peach Mango juice from his coach, he might have envisioned Princess Peach and Yoshi waiting with the juice at the finish line. Whatever his motivation, it certainly paid off. Kenny achieved a personal record of 14:14.9, running his fastest pace yet at 9:10 per mile.
Endonis Goodman, the lone girl representative, ran her first race after suffering an ankle injury from stepping in a hole. Following her coaches’ advice, she concentrated on herself and aimed to run her best race. In her words, “I went into my own little world.” And she certainly did, persevering to finish in 18:30 while maintaining a steady pace of 11:54 per mile—just 4 seconds shy of her personal best.
These athletes have shown resilience and determination, proving they just keep getting better. With team members recovering from injury and early school illness, the Panthers hope to be back in full force next Thursday at 4 PM for the Hawley Dale Skallerud Memorial Meet in Hawley, MN.
