Aaniin -Thursday October 3, 2024 the State MDE Indian Education Commissioner held a Field Hearing at the Blackbear Casino Event Center, in Fond Du Lac. Cass Lake Bena participated by bringing over 4 students and an Instructor, Codee Ortiz, Anna Mason, Lisa Goggleye, Elijah Roberts and Mrs. Dawn Staples. Today we held a recognition to the students, with an honor song and presented them with blankets for speaking on behalf of Cass Lake Bena, both on their positive outcomes as well as challenges they face as students in general. The Commissioner focused his attention on our students and their input was valued, he irriterated how he would like to just sit in a room full of students without the pressure of onlookers and have students open up in general. It takes courage to speak in front of State Staff, School Districts, online participates and their own peers of challenges our students face. Our students did a wonderful job and introduced themselves using the Ojibwe protocol.

Last week, the Panthers competed at the Dale Hawley Memorial Invitational and earned awards for the third time in a row! The boys' team finished sixth, beating larger schools like Park Rapids and Valley City.
The day started with a hairball when their coach handed out slightly damp uniforms due to a broken dryer. You might think these cats would hesitate to put on wet gear, similar to how house cats avoid getting wet because their fur doesn't dry quickly and makes them uncomfortable.
But wait—these are wild cats! Unlike their house-dwelling cousins, the Panthers embrace a little water, whether to cool off or hunt. While house cats fret over dirty paws, Panthers are always on the prowl, a lesson they learned early on from Coach Voge’s elementary gym class, where they were taught to keep their "paws up" and always be ready to spring into action.
This week's theme was stamina, as every runner, except those recovering from illness or injury, maintained or improved their pace from the previous week over a longer course (From 1.5 to 2 miles).
As they stepped onto the course, some worries crept in about facing big teams. “Oh, we’re about to get cooked!” Markis joked, using slang for getting beaten. But as they huddled together, the team quickly agreed—it didn’t matter if the other teams were cooking; the Panthers were “grilling.”
And grill they did, roasting the competition! Prior to the race, Coach Voge encouraged the Panthers to channel Lightning McQueen's famous motto, "Ka-chow!" After chowing down on their snack of choice—Goldfish crackers—legend has it they were heard saying CATchow alongside McQueen's iconic phrase, I am speed channeling their inner speedsters.
As they lined up, bouncing with energy, it was clear the Goldfish had given them a turbo boost, showing that this snack certainly does smile back. Each runner was ready to take off like a well-oiled machine.
The girls' team made a comeback this week, leading the charge was Lily Chessmore, who returned from illness. She paced herself wisely, finishing with a time of 16:22 by negative-splitting 8:25 for the first mile and an impressive sub 8 minute mile at 7:57 for the second. Endonis Goodman, also battling illness, pushed through to finish in 24:55.5. Motivated by her grandmother’s birthday, she kicked into high gear for the final 400 meters, proving that Panthers never quit.
First across the line for the boys was the cousin duo Markis and Brayden, who proudly told their coach they’d made a pact to run side by side, forming an impenetrable "rock wall" that no one could pass. Perhaps inspired by their feline cousins from The Lion King, they built their own Pride Rock, defending their position like kings. In running, there's a saying about hitting the wall meaning hitting a wall of fatigue—but in this race, Markis and Brayden were the wall, holding off every challenger.
The duo leaned into the downhill, unleashing the beast—or in this case, the FEAST sweeping past four runners from in the final 400 meters to claim ninth and tenth, earning awards. They showed exactly who the hunters were and who the prey were, outkicking food-themed mascots like the "Moorhead Spuds" and "Hawley Nuggets." Markis ran 13:02, with an average pace of 6:31 a mile matching his previous pace over a longer distance. Brayden finished right behind in 13:04 with an average pace of 6:32, destroying his previous record of 15:48.
Next up was Zane Halse, who showed impressive stamina improvement this week! Motivated by his favorite Dairy Queen ice cream and coupons burning a hole in his pocket, the team jokes that Zane is footing the team meal bill. He dodged the bill by running fast, beating his previous record of 15:11 with a time of 14:53, maintaining a 7:26 pace.
Kenny Litzau finished in 18:20, maintaining his previous pace from last week for a longer distance. He fueled up with bananas he neatly stacked in a pile after—perhaps planning to toss them at competitors like in Mario Kart. But he didn't need them; his speed spoke for itself!
Aidan Bissonette, who had been battling confidence issues, delivered a breakout performance. When his coach jokingly asked if he’d had Wheaties for breakfast, Aidan responded by obliterating his previous time of 22:38, finishing with an impressive 19:03 at a 9:31 per mile pace—significantly faster than 11:17 pace. With a performance like that, Coach should know that big cats don’t eat cereal—they feast on purr-otein bars made from the finest tuna and salmon.
When the Panthers returned from the meet, they spotted a creature creeping by the loading dock. Was it a fox? A raccoon? No, it was a house cat! But as the team pulled up, the cat bolted. The cat’s swift departure seemed symbolic of the team’s evolution.
Just like that house cat, the Panthers were once timid and unsure, but now they’re evolving into the big cats they’re meant to be. The Panthers look forward to pouncing back into action next week at the Perham Invitational on October 10th at 4 pm
